Children's Advocacy Institute

The Children’s Advocacy Institute (CAI), founded at the nonprofit University of San Diego School of Law in 1989, is an academic, research, and advocacy law firm. CAI represents the interests and rights of children and youth in impact litigation, legislative and regulatory advocacy, research and public education projects, and public service programs. CAI’s academic component trains law students and attorneys to be effective child advocates. Active at both the state and federal levels, CAI’s advocacy program seeks to improve the status, health and well-being of children and youth in all areas of their lives, with special emphasis on improving the child protection and foster care systems and enhancing resources that are available to youth aging out of foster care and homeless youth.

The Foster Family-based Treatment Association (FFTA) was established in 1988 to promote, develop, improve, and support the quality of Treatment Foster Care (TFC). Since that time, FFTA has grown to become the leader in treatment foster care. Its more than 400 member agencies provide treatment foster care services to over 50,000 children and youth each year and a larger array of services to over 600,000 children and youth throughout North America. In carrying out its mission to strengthen agencies that support families caring for vulnerable children, FFTA provides Program Standards, technical assistance, professional development programs and other resources to help agencies achieve positive outcomes. FFTA advocates for the creation of a uniform definition for TFC services and for the funding mechanisms and methodologies that are needed to provide the intensive mental health and family-based services that our most vulnerable children and youth need to stabilize and thrive.
